The world become comprehensible -> we can take it for granted: nature vs nurture. Lack of language & interaction in childhood -> a life outside the mainstream society: socialization & social reproduction. Thru socialization, norms & values are carried on thru generations. Sharing culture w/in family groups makes it feel inherited: g. h mead & socialization. Mead understood socialization thru the symbolic interactionist perspective. Focused largely on primary socialization: portion of the process that takes place with infants & young children. Socialization occurs through children interacting w/ those around them & beginning to identify certain roles & behaviors as patterns. Children first take on the roles and attitudes of their significant others first & then those of the generalized other: jean piaget: stage of cognitive development.
