Biographical sketch: rollo may was born in ohio in 1909 in a family with intense marital conflicts. He attended a seminary in order to ask fundamental questions about human existence. He was exposed to the existentialism of kierkegaard and heidegger. He then studied psychoanalysis and received the first ph. d. in clinical psychology from. He later contracted tuberculosis and studied the topic of anxiety both by freud and kierkegaard. During his life he taught and saw clients. He was honored with many awards and published many books. He died in 1994 at the age of 85. In popular minds, existentialism is equated with emptiness and meaninglessness of life. It brings gloom and despair into public mind. It has roots in the writings of the danish philosopher kierkegaard. It is concerned with the basic realties of people"s existence or dasein (existence). It is also concerned with ontology or the study of the nature of being.
