PSY 2012 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Sympathetic Nervous System, Parasympathetic Nervous System, Frontal Lobe
Document Summary
Cells conduct electricity and talk to each other. We combine the functions in each system to give us our senses. Brain wired by experience: we are biopsychological systems. These are the building blocks on the neural information system. Dendrite receive info and relay it to the body cell; listen. Axon passes the info from the body cell to the other dendrites or other neurons; speak. Myelin sheath a cover to insulate the glands; like a rubber cover over wires. Glial cells support for those nerve cells; worker bees. Action potential a brief electric charge travelling down the axon. Our brain is more complex than a computer, but slower at executing responses. Fluid outside of an axon"s is made of positive sodium ions. Fluid interior is made of negatively charged potassium ions. Depolarization occurs when the positive sodium ions flow inside of the axon, which keeps occurring, opening up the membrane.
