PSY 2012 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Cognitive Development, Egocentrism, Animism
Document Summary
Sensorimotor stage: use senses, movement- hands and feet (touch everything, out of sight=out of mind, like a dog. Concrete operations stage: all the limitations from stage 2 become abilities -no longer egocentric, animistic, limited by centration -can conserve quantity/number and think logically. Formal operations stage: need exposure to abstract situations or might not develop later on, representation. Your age determines when you move to a stage, not experience. Kids pass through the stages in a speci c, unchanging order. At some point, your skill set will change and now you interact in a different way. Different objects are interacted with in the same way. Scheme: skill set that children use to interact with the world. If you surpassed a critical point of development, you may never be able to develop the intricacies of language we think even though we don"t have language.
