PSY 2012 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Classical Conditioning, Limbic System, Hindbrain
Document Summary
All of behavior either biological predetermine, or it is learned. Human have larger cortical surface area of all animals that we are aware of => high capacity of learning. Most that surface area contains outer lining = cerebrum cortex (most complex part, and evolutionary is the newest) + hindbrain: connects at the lowest point to the spinal cord. Responsible for the most primitive behavior that enable us to survive (regulate heart rate, respiration, circulation). We can not function with 1 big unit; we need smaller ones to corporate to work. All problem solving, learning occurs with the forebrain. There is no evidence that we will run out of space since brain is always organizing itself. + subcortical parts: under the cortex = control and regulation of emotions. Both anger and fear are in this limbic system (under cortex). Cortex: left and right brain are anatomically the same, but functionally different (4 lobes)
