PSY 2012 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Lobotomy, Prefrontal Cortex, Central Sulcus
Document Summary
Separates two major parts of the cortex. In front of it is the primary motor cortex. What mainly controls our motor functions, moving. Behind it is the primary somesthetic cortex. This is what controls our skin sensations, or touch. Biggest bundle of nerves in the body. The left side process speech (broca"s area) The right side processes everything else (music, tone, etc) Some minor surgery can happen where electrodes are placed on the surface of the brain to fix problems. Other solutions include a prefrontal lobotomy, but those are largely frowned upon. About 2 inches thick in humans. Was performed on people with jacksonian epilepsy, to try to stop/lessen seizures. The corpus callosum is sucked out of the brain through a syringe. Most surgeries were successful, and people were able to live normal lives, and their seizures did lessen. Dominant: the trait that is going to show. Recessive: the gene is still there, but it doesn"t always show through.
