Jus sanguinis (right of blood): citizenship is not determined by place of birth but by having one or both parents who are citizens of the state. Blacks (national association for the advancement of colored people) Jamestown becomes the first permanent english settlement in america. A dutch ship comes in bringing the first africans, they aren"t slaves but indentured servants. Indentured servants were not slaves they were simply workers on a contract. Eli whitney invents cotton gin (gin just stands for engine) - early 1800s. Jefferson mentions that slavery shouldn"t exist in the first draft but the south made him take it out. We have a court case (judicial output) Sanford gave dred to his son and the son eventually let him free. Supreme court ruled that he was not protected by the constitution since he was property and not a citizen (bc he was a slave)
