HSC 4555 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Connective Tissue Disease, Rheumatic Fever, Polyarthritis
Document Summary
Narrowing-very bad at allowing blood to flow forward. Valve found on l side of the heart. Most people are not aware that they have a mvp. Hear click when the valve is out of place. Not a life threatening disorder, does not need treatment. Patients might have shortness of breath, lightheaded, fatigue. Females have a higher likelihood of mvp than males. Porcine valves- actual animal valves but they tear easily, also very controversial. Skin, brain, heart valves- antibodies against these tissue end up with endocardia inflammation. Minor: fever, joint pain, abdominal pain, nose bleeds. Rash will start one place and then migrate someplace else. Invade the neural wall of the heart and heart valves. Staph and strep will invade endocardia structures and colonize. Vegetation that is crumbly on the valve of the heart, the pieces break off and can lodge into other places. Does not typically happen in people with normal hearts- occurs in people with a pre- existing condition.
