COM 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Subjective Constancy, Symbolic Interactionism, Stereotype
Document Summary
Perception is using the senses to process information about the external environment. Passive perception: people are simply recorders of stimuli. Active perception: perception in which your mind selects, organizes, and interprets that which you sense. Subjective perception: your uniquely constructed meaning attributed to sensed stimuli. Physiological factors: everyone is physiologically different such as sex, height, body type, senses etc. People can judge other people based on how they look. Past experiences and roles: perceptual constancy explains the influence of your past experiences on your perception. It is the idea that your past experiences lead you to see the world in a way that is difficult to change; your initial perceptions persist. Present feelings and circumstances: how you feel at the moment can alter you perceptions and communications. Selection: you cant perceive all the stimuli in the environment. Through selection, you neglect some stimuli and focus on others.
