Ethos (beliefs, ideas)- the receiver"s perception of a sender"s competence and trustworthiness; credibility. Message- the message the speaker intends to send. Channel- the means through which the message is sent. Receiver(s)- the audience to whom the message is delivered. Environment- the situation or context in which the transaction takes place. Answer: the physical surroundings in which one speaks. Elaboration- the degree to which a receiver scrutinizes a message. Central (message)- receivers mentally elaborate on the elements of your message and carefully scrutinize your arguments and evidence. Peripheral (outside the message)- receivers give brief attention to the message without elaborated thought. Why should one strive to increase the central route processing. B/c when persuasion is done through the central route it is more lasting and resistant to counter-persuasion. Interpersonal communication- the process of using messages to generate meaning b/w at least two people in a situation that allows mutual opportunities for both speaking and listening.
