CHM 2045C Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Molecular Geometry, Electronegativity, Chemical Bond
Document Summary
Properties of molecular substances depend on the shape of the molecule. Taste and caloric value are independent food properties. The caloric value of food depends on the amount of energy released when the food is metabolized. Taste cells act as specific molecular detectors and discern sugar molecule"s shape and charge distribution. Sugar molecules enter these, or active sites, and the protein splits apart causing ion channels to open, resulting in nerve signal transmission. The signal reaches the brain and registers a sweet taste. Wedge shape line in lewis structure means coming towards you off the page. Dashed lines mean going away from you off the page. All types of bonds, e- pairs, and e- alone are electron groups or domains (1 bond type or 1 pair or 1 e- = 1 group). Different types of e- groups exert slightly different repulsions, resulting in different angles. Linear: two e- groups around the central atom and occupy positions opposite each other.
