Document Summary

Thermochemistry: the study of relationships between chemistry and energy. Kinetic energy, aka thermal energy associated with temperature, is energy of motion or energy that is being transferred. Thermal energy flows from matter at higher temps to lower. Thermal equilibrium: no additional net transfer of heat and the system and surroundings have equal temperature. The amount of kinetic energy an object has is directly proportional to its mass in kg and velocity in m/s, ke = mv2. Potential energy is energy that is stored in an object, or energy associated with the composition and position of the object. It is also chemical energy that is associated with positions of electrons and nuclei. Reactions can convert potential to kinetic energy by releasing heat. System is the chemical equation or object and a surroundings is what is going on in and around the reaction. One joule (j) is the amount of energy needed to move a 1-kg mass a distance of 1 meter.
