Document Summary

Four major concepts: body plan: animal shape and size, homeostasis: maintaining internal environment, homeostatic processes: form, function, and behavior, energy requirements: related to animal size, activity, and environment, body plan. Every animal needs a food source, water, shelter, locomotion, and oxygen. They also need to be able to avoid predation and reproduce. Animals need to exchange gasses, nutrients, and waste with their environment. This is done easier when there is single cell or few cell layers. It"s more difficult when there are more complex and more cell layers present. This requires specialized branched surfaces, interstitial fluid, circulatory system, etc: homeostasis: maintaining internal environment. A mechanism that allows for the internal balance of temperature, salinity, ph, glucose levels, etc. Nervous system: e. g. birds, mammals, some specialized fish like blue fin tune: homeostatic processes: form, function, and behavior. Endothermic ( endo = inside): use of metabolic heat to regulate body temperature. Has physiological adaptations to warm or cool the body.
