Elements of life: origin of the cells: smallest unit of life that can function independent & perform all of the necessary functions of life, including reproducing itself. All living org are composed of one or more cells & all cells come only from. Many essential chemical reactions of life take place here. Nearly all cells contain dna pre-existing cells. No membrane-enclosed nucleus; its dna resides in the middle. In 2 taxonomic domains: bacteria, archaea, structurally different but, live in extreme habitats, eukaryotic. Specialized organelles: organelle: perform speci c functions. Organelles that communicate with one another: via membrane channels & small vesicles, energy related organelles. Origin: when a large eukaryotic cell engulfed independent prokaryotes, endosymbiotic theory. Plant and animal cells: have similar features, animal has mitochondria but plant has both mitochondria & chloroplasts, mitochondria, chloroplast. Folding of membrane or tissue: outer surface becomes inner surface, endosymbiosis. Combination of 2 simple prokaryotes to produce one eukaryote.
