Production: look at reasons why something would be used over something else, beyond raw materials; look at how something is manufactured and the decisions made while manufacturing; it s important because deals with technology as well as social organizations. *must be aware that artifacts (and many other archaeological data) change in their uses over time. Taphonomy: what happens to an animal or plant after it dies > ties into formation processes. Things can be compressed, bones are not in the same articulation and are squished which is important to be able to identify since paleolithic archaeologists need to be able to identify changes in humans over time. Chipped stone technology: refitting, indirect/direct percussion, pressure flaking.
