Are there any valuable defense mechanisms: all of the above mechanisms are considered maladaptive, mean to be used on a temporary basis until the mind can cope and deal with these problems. Positive mental health: can using mature defense mechanisms rather than the other lead to a more positive mental state, yes - according to vaillant"s interpretation of the results: Illustrates that major depressive disorder occurred only among men with high life stress scores. Perpetual controversy: no other observer of human nature has received as much scrutiny as freud. In contrast, there is no hesitation regarding philosophy"s right to study mental phenomena. However, perhaps influenced by his scientific language, freud would not go as far as to say that human free will exists. The nomothetic vs. idiographic approach: nomothetic approach - dominates with its goal being the establishment of general empirical laws stated in mathematical terms (newton"s law of gravity)
