Lukianoff is a lawyer & president of foundation for individual rights (fire) & haidt is a professor of ethical leadership at nyu. Inspiration for article came from joint observations & also from news reports about entering college class of 2013. Nothing unusual about student involvement but in 2013 student activists demanded university administrators protect them from ideas they perceived to be harmful. Lukianoff & haidt charged universities were engaging in vindictive protectiveness ** By trying to protect them in short run, these universities were actually harming them in the long run** Many were seeking protection from class material & campus speakers perceived to be offensive. New vocab: microaggression , safe place , & trigger warning used on college campuses. Many universities especially in northeast & west coast accommodated their requests. Authors concerned students not equipped to handle inevitable challenges & pressures of contemporary society**
