SOC SCI H1F Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Narcissistic Personality Disorder, Libido, Cathexis
Document Summary
Fell in love with his own reflection. Was punished for his selfishness & blatant disregard of others. His fate was to fall in love with himself. Could never reach the loveliness that he saw in the water. Term is also used to describe a condition of contemporary society** Richness of the term is drawn from greek mythology. Personality type has been with us for long time. Extreme narcissism: failure to establish a meaningful relationship with others. Had to like yourself but cannot let it become extreme. Everyone around you meant to be used for own purposes. Had to rely on looking at his reflection. Perceives self as privileged being, center of caregiver attention. Sense of self-importance cemented when libido attaches self as its object (cathexis), thereby creating primary narcissism** Wanted to expand psychoanalysis to other forms of psychopathy not related to anxiety & hysterical disorders. Idea that very young children experience form of self-rapture -> primary narcissism.
