SOC SCI H1F Lecture 7:
Document Summary
What man loses through the social contract is natural liberty and what he gains is civil liberty. Moral liberty alones makes man master of himself. Natural is the natural right to have anything you can take; no limit except one"s own physical power. Civil liberty is the right of property in what man possesses. Willing the general will and following it. As a baby, you can go whenever you want, and then you are toilet trained, and now you use the bathroom. Behavior that was forced upon us like brushing our teeth, that we did not want to adopt, has become basic to out very understanding of freedom. A teacher denying people to go use the restroom and they soil themselves, would be restricting something that was forced upon you in the first place. Obeying a law we prescribe for ourselves; want to study for four hours and then doing it. Prescribing a law to yourself that you obey.
