Want to protect property & the self. Governed by locals those who are not local threaten to change set ways. Government needs system of checks & balances structure that keeps society thriving (people in power need to be held accountable) External cultural & legal structure/restrictions necessary for society to thrive. Restrictions are not only necessary but valued built over generations & foundational to society. *rousseau is an elitist & is hypocritical, but he makes good points -> difficult to follow him sometimes. Malleable & improved with work & time. Distinctions (loyalties, social divides) between people must be removed for true potential. Social pressure is social constraint & inhibits true expression. Guided by elites & representative government (oligarchy) Leadership must value common good over personal gains (cannot be selfish or hypnotized by their power) Abstract concept that helps us begin to understand how people fundamentally treat each other. Man leaves state of nature for two reasons.
