Framing of the past with west being western europe & america -> more individualistic in nature. In the east (eastern europe & asia) -> considered to be more community-based culture. With individualism -> the self is the central unit. With corporatism -> the community is central. Greatest fear -> exclusion from the community. These are two different ends of the spectrum. These are abstract ends of the spectrum being applied. Perhaps can be reframed as christianity v. eastern religions (islam, buddhism, etc. ) or capitalism v. communism. Marriage for love (individualistic) v. marriage for family union (community- oriented) *marriage: a history by stephanie coontz. Different feelings of obligation -> more likely to care for others in corporatist. The way that women & children are treated. Not supposed to take self too seriously or think are too special. Not supposed to be flashy about accomplishment. Learn different laws about not thinking too highly of self.
