Rousseau"s 1st phase of state of nature. Lecture #4: man is happy savage, awake and sleeping all the time two operating principles. Species" compassion or pity: pre-reasoning phase, rousseau thinks reasoning is corrosive to human beings, believes that thinking about things is not very good and that you have to get beyond that. When single individual thinks he can do better with provisions for two: argues that agriculture, arts, metallurgy leads to this. Discovery that together one can do more than separately. Plot by rich that leads to establishment of civil society fundamentally different from hobbes and locke: striking feature of human nature that many ways that continues to exist. Essential feature the way in which we run around, we assess ourselves in terms of our activity in civil society, we listen to each other. We turn over the judgment of us to society that"s what alienation is about. Rousseau says trying to fit into groups is a real problem.
