Alkaloid: nitrogen-containing organic metabolite, produced by plants and deters insects, bitter and toxic. 2 main types of plants: arabica, robusta- twice as much caffeine as arabica. Harvested mostly in countries around the equator. 2nd most traded export product in the world (next to oil) Prepared from roasted seeds (beans) found inside red coffee berries: leaves also contain caffeine. May account for 75% of all caffeine consumed by adults in the u. s. Caffeine content varies widely: one 16 oz cup of coffee may contain 259 to 564 mg caffeine, one shot espresso may have 58 to 259 mg caffeine. Prepared from cured leaves of the camellia sinensis plant. 2 types: china plant and assam plant. 5 oz cup of tea contains about 42 mg of caffeine (about half of coffee) Yerba mate has more caffeine than black and green teas.
