3rd most widely used psychoactive drug (after caffeine and alcohol) Like caffeine, it is a plant based alkaloid stimulant drug. Toxic, used as an insecticide, must wear gloves when harvesting. About 1 mg ingested from a cigarette. Leaves from plant are cured and prepared in several ways: cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco (tobacco is burned, chewing tobacco, snuff (not burned) Nicotine is readily absorbed from all parts of the body. Inhalation: most tobacco is smoked, nicotine is vaporized in tiny particles, absorbed by mucous membranes in lungs, fast and effective way for nicotine to reach the brain. First cultivated in the americas around 6000 bce. People of the americas were smoking tobacco by 1 bce. Columbus presented with dry tobacco leaves in 1492. Use of tobacco spread in europe when french ambassador jean nicot suggested medical uses for the plant.
