Document Summary

28- aging (chapter 29 in the 4th edition) Chronological age is how old you really are and physiological how old you feel. Realized that cells could live up to 100 years, but due to diet do not live as long. One class of theories of aging is based on the concept that damage, either due to normal toxic by-products of metabolism or inefficient repair/defensive systems, accumulates throughout the entire lifespan and causes aging. These theories assert that aging is an essential and innate part of the biology of people, and that aging is programmed into our body systems. If antioxidants unavailable: free radicals suddenly multiply, the cell"s functioning disrupted, cell components damaged, cell necrosis. Free radical stress: lipid peroxidation, atherogenic activity, carcinogenic activity. Inadequate dietary intake of antioxidant nutrients, or also chronic. Cumulative exposure to high levels of glucocorticoids and higher omega-6 fatty acids with decline in beta-6 desaturation. Young old: 65-74 (8% good, very good, or excellent health).
