Ethics: the use of humans and animals in studies. The sad case of booee the chimp- first chimp used in sign language experiments, then used for medical purposes (hepatitis) retired in 1995 and lived in wildlife waystation. Voluntary participation is crucial for using humans- must have informed consent. Risk/reward ratio (is the risk of the experiment worth the end result?) There are protected populations such as children, the mentally disabled, and prisoners who may not be able to give consent. Death of a subject: joseph santana was a patient at a psychiatric hospital and died because the doctors and researchers tested a new drug on him- he had schizophrenia and was used as a trial. The primary risk is deception- intentionally misinforming participants or failing to disclose all information. This should not be allowed if it influences voluntary participation. Skull of phineas gage- damage to the frontal cortex, but survived.
