Variations in Sexual Behavior, Sexual Disorders, and Sex Therapy
• when is sexual behavior abnormal?
o mild fetishes or other sexual preferences within range of normal behavior
• fetishism
o focus on non-living objects for arousal
o cause unknown; maybe classical conditioning
• sadism and masochism
o definitions
▪ sexual sadist: pleasure from causing pain, humiliation, etc.
▪ sexual masochist: pleasure from receiving pain
▪ bondage and discipline: use of restraints
• enforce obedience and servitude without necessarily causing any pain
▪ dominance and submission: exchange of power
o sadomasochistic behavior
▪ clothespin, wax, handcuffs, verbal humiliation
o dominance and submission
▪ key to S/M is dominance and submission
▪ 30% dominant, 40% submissive, 30% versatile
• variations in sexual desire
o asexuality/hypoactive sexual desire
▪ no sexual attraction/desire is very low
▪ asexual: 1-4%
▪ low desire
• 10% (<50 years) to 50% (over age 65) women
• half that for men
• a case of low sexual desire
o hypersexuality/compulsive sexual desire/sexual addiction
▪ extraordinarily high levels of sexual activity/drive
▪ an addictive process much like alcoholism
▪ hypersexual behavior disorder is not listed as a disorder in the most recent
version of the DSM

o arousal disorders
▪ Female Sexual Arousal Disorder (FSAD)
• lack of response to sexual stimuli
• including lack of lubrication
o 19% of women
▪ Erectile disorder
• inability to have or maintain an erection
• commonly occurs in elderly people because erectile capacity
decreases with age
• blood vessels going to penis become blocked or narrowed
o diabetes, hypertension, multiple sclerosis, nerve damage,
hormonal balances, heart diseased, unhealthy lifestyle choices
• 10% of men suffer from erectile disorder
o orgasmic disorder
