If you find out your other friend donated , you might not feel as generous! The idea of this is that we learn about our own abilities based on what we see in others. No objective standard exists to measure against, so usually when we are uncertain. For example, new office donation program, not sure what amount would be good to give, so you are likely to compare yourself to others.
