Mood disorders are disorders that involve severe and enduring disturbances in emotionality ranging from elation to severe depression. Hypomanic episode (not quite mania, milder form of mania, fewer symptoms) Problem may be due to the disorder and the change in their life. Bipolar 1: hits highest peak of mania and hits lowest of lows in depression, but hits euthymia. Bipolar 2: hits hypomania but still hits lowest of lows in depression and hits euthymia again. Cyclothymia: more regular cycling curve, hitting hypomania. One or more major depressive episodes separated by periods of remission. Single episode is highly unusual, recurrent is more common. Probability of remission within 1 year approaches 90% 25% people 18-29 years old had already experienced mdd. 10% people who develop mdd are 55+ years. A distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood lasting at least 1 week. Significant degree of at least 3 of the following:
