More or less stable, characteristic way a person thinks, feels, and behaves in a variety of situations. Why do we make a big deal out of labeling others: it helps us predict how one might respond, explain behavior, helps us adaptively interact with others, and so on. What is a personality trait is rigid/ not flexible: it may start inducing stress/ causing dysfunction (represents a problem in their ability to cope) People with personality traits that are so exaggerated and inflexible that they distress themselves or cause problems in their school, work, or interpersonal relationships. Chronic: origins in childhood and persists through adulthood affects all aspects of the individuals life (respond poorly to tx) They are descriptions that center on a few striking features. Dsm 5 lists 10 personality disorders, each which has a few prominent characteristics. The dsm 5 provides a detailed set of criteria for each disorder.
