Document Summary
Lecture 4 proof of the unreality of time. Idealism consisted largely in the claim that we usually take to be central features of reality are merely ideal; they are dependent on the mind as opposed to objective reality. 1908 paper unreality of time most famous argument that claims that things existing in time is false. B-series: relates events to one another in terms of earlier than and later than dated/static time series presents the whole history from a point of view outside of time. An a-series sentence is true at one time and false at another. A b-series expression is true at all times and at any time. In summation: time involves change, change is only possible in the a-series, a series involves contradictions, therefore time is unreal. Personal time- relative to you (time on your wristwatch) External time- relative to the rest of the world. Time travel happens when there is a discrepancy between the two.
