Document Summary

Historical materialism is a methodological approach to the study of society, economics, and history passage on page 309 gives us an example of historical materialism: Both settlers and khoikhoi were restrained by climate and resources, particularly water. The necessity of mobility limited the scope of material culture. By living in the same climate and the same bases for supporting themselves, khoikhoi and many settlers shared a value in wealth. People and animals once lived under the earth with kaggen. They lived with each other peacefully and they always understood each other. During this phase kaggen plotted to create the world above the earth. He created a tree, then he let the first man and woman go up the hole. Soon all the people gathered by the tree. Next, kaggen helped the animals climb through the hole. He warned the men and women to not create any fire, or evil will occur.
