National Turmoil & the Fate of Women
Introduction
- novel set in 1953 -> during the coup staged by CIA

Women Without Men & the 1979 Iranian Revolution
- started with grassroots demonstrations
- multiple movements joined together
- revolution that brought down the monarchy
- one of most bloodless revolutions in history
- some kind of harmony needed amongst the various groups
Role of Women in the Revolution
- women were actively involved
- Nayereh Tohidi on Women’s Participation
- many women took up the veil as symbol of solidarity + opposition to Shah
- seems contradictory to Western feminists
- higher objective of getting rid of Shah + making sure that corrupt regime comes to an
end
- there was no thinking about what comes after the revolution
- belief that everything would simply be fine if the Shah was no longer in power
Mohammad Reza Shah leaves Iran on January 16, 1979
- supposed to be brief vacation aborad
- never comes back + dies abroad -> buried in Cairo
On February 1,1979 Ayatollah Khomeini arrives in Tehran
- had been exiled to Iraq
- started agitating Iranian monarchy by sending cassette tapes around
- Shah wanted to expel Khomeini in an effort to stop flow of tapes -> did not help
- Khomeini had even broader audience in Paris -> interacted with international media
- became the spiritual leader of the revolution
- disavowed any claim to power
- wanted to go to city that served as holy center of learning
- passages from speech given to group of women in holy city
- talks about how Islam treats both men + women equally
- women need say in fundamental say in future of nation
- acknowledges role of Iranian role in the revolutionary movement
- want women to “attain high rank of true humanity”
- need share in determining destiny -> Islam grants them a share
- portrayed women as sexual objects during the Shah’s regime
- implementation of Western values + removal of the veil
