Document Summary

Behaviors are the result of experiences with environmental stimuli. Learning involves associations among stimuli and responses. Learning occurs when stimuli and responses occur close together in time. Most species learn in a similar manner. Dog salivated after hearing the footsteps of pavlov"s laboratory assistant. Stimulus discrimination (but not to all bells) Operant conditioning = behaviors increase or decrease as a result of their consequences. Positive desired stimulus presented effect on behavior increases. Negative undesired stimulus removed effect on behavior increases. Positive undesired stimulus presented effect on behavior decreases. Negative desired stimulus removed effect on behavior decreases. To learn a new behavior, reinforce continuously once learned, switch to variable reinforcement schedule. 80% of the time you lose playing a card game but you keep playing because you know that 20% of the time you will win something. Variable reinforcement you don"t know when you will win but you know it will happen sometime.
