EDUC 106 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Learned Helplessness, Classroom Management
Document Summary
K-2nd grade have similar body structures and height. Organized sports: minimal differences between boys and girls motor skills, maturity through puberty. Industry vs. inferiority: driven to initiate activities. Have children compare accomplishments to own past and not to their peers: want to please the teacher like they want to please their parent even if they have a bad teacher, motivation, mastery-oriented attributions. Give different strategies to the children so they don"t get discouraged. Even when you remove the barrier they don"t try and go around the barrier: when a child makes a mistake and then wont try anymore, make sure to not allow this to happen. Activities to promote positive social-emotional development: use literature to discuss emotions. Encourage children to express their emotions, even negative ones: write about feelings. Kids can be very literal: ways people express emotions is different, cognitively.
