-Last class we talked of Burgundy and its different regions which specialized in high class wines.
-Today we’ll discuss Bordeaux, which has a semi-continental climate.
-It also has a couple of rivers that run through it, all of which constitute to its prosperity.
-Its temperature is milder than that of Burgundy. But it also has some wet summers, which means
the grapes don’t ripen properly → We’ll have chaptalization.
- Vineyard ownerships is different in Bordeaux than Burgundy.
-The vineyards are larger.
-The inheritance customs are different because of British history.
-The wines are varietal blends. This means after each wine is separately made, they get blended
together:
-For instance, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon are blended together.
-Compared to Burgundy, the Bordeaux reds have more color, more tannin, and less alcohol.
-Pomerol:
-It’s a region in Bordeaux which uses Merlot as its default grape.
-A good vintage bottle goes for something between 1470 and 4670 dollars per bottle.
-St. Emilion:
-It’s another region that blends Merlot (40%) and Cabernet franc (60%).
-Sauternes and Barsac:
-It produces sweet and blend wines of Semillon and Sauvignon blanc.
-Graves:
-It produces white and red wines, but both are blended. For instance, of Bordeaux 5 and other
things.
-Medoc:
-It’s the place that has the most expensive and prestigious wines (AOC). [MEMORIZE THE
LIST]
-The area was at first just for sheeps to fuck on, but it turned out that its soil was suitable for
Cabernet Sauvignon.
-The appellation of Bordeaux is different than that of Burgundy:
-You have region, the subregion, and village. Instead of a vineyard, then, you have a
chateau.
-The chateaus; however, are not part of the AOC system. But still the name of the chateau is the
largest on the label.
-Therefore, the village AOC name is secondary.
-During the reign of Napoleon III, the chateaus were ranked based on prices.
-Only the first five can put the “grand cru” name on it. (?)
-One of the grand crus are the Rothschild family, the famous Jewish banking family.
-Graves is a chateau that is not in Medoc, but it can produce wines that have the same varietals as
Medoc.
-They also rank their wines according to quality, which means the lower crap is cheaper.
-The reason why south-western vineyards didn’t grow as much is due to the “Bordeaux rule,”
which basically stopped their growth.
-The Rhone Valley:
-It’s along the Rhone river.
-Two distinctive regions are the northern and the southern Rhone.
