• Idioculture: “group culture” (Gary Fine)
o CONCEPTUAL DEFINITION: a system of knowledge, beliefs, behaviors, and
customs shared by members of an interacting group to which members can refer
and employ as the basis for further interaction
▪ We share experiences with each other
▪ Helps structure group later on and developed within the group
o Prerequisites for Incorporation: (5 Step Process)
▪ 1.) Known by 1+ members
▪ 2.) Usable: mentionable in the group (What the group imagines as ideal)
▪ 3.) Functional: fits the group’s goals/needs
▪ 4.) Appropriate to culture
▪ 5.) Triggering Event that sparks selection
• Order: K>U>F>A>T
▪ **** It is easy to confuse between “usable” and “appropriate”
Idioculture and the Self
• Idiocultures & Identities:
o Informs how we see ourselves, from ourselves, and our identities
▪ The more immersed in idiocultures, the more you identify with the group
• Ex. Work Identities
▪ Long-term participation and identity
• Idioculture- Contextualizing the Self
o Ex. contextualizing performance and behavior
• Small--Group History, Distinction, and Regulation of the Self
o Illustrated through jokes and joking
Idiocultures & Jokes
• 3 Social Qualities of Jokes
o 1.) Embedded:
▪ in the context of long-term or permanent relationships/ established
relationships
o 2.) Interactive:
▪ Joke demands a response
▪ Positive response, otherwise it was not a joke
o 3.) Referential:
▪ Share some sets of references to get the joke
What Jokes “Do” for Groups
• Can smooth groups relations when there is tension
o Signals shared history
• Sharing
o Feeling of cohesion
• Separating
o Help draw boundaries between yourself and others and between your group and
others
• Securing
o Getting people to act appropriately in the group
o Constrain and regulate behavior of others in the group
▪ Ex. jokes help establish and enforce group control
o Potential problem: can marginalize people in group and can kick someone out if
the joke goes against someone’s master status… CAN exclude people.
