Document Summary

Chapter 14: abnormal psychology: classifying psychological disorders. Psychopathology is maladaptive and negatively affects everyday life. Psychological disorders are common: half of all americans will be diagnosed with a mental disorder during their lifetime. Every year, 1 in 4 americans receive a diagnosis of a mental disorder. But here"s the truth: mental illness is a disease, just like cancer or heart disease. It is not a person"s fault or failing. Think about etiology (the factors that contribute to the development of a disorder: very few disorders have clear etiologies. This can make disorders very difficult to treat: diagnostics and statistical manual (dsm) serves as a universal authority for psychiatric diagnosis. It offers common definitions and standard criteria/symptoms for mental disorders. First published in 1952 now on 5th version: reflects medical consensus of what constitutes a mental disorder. This can lead to two individuals with very different symptoms being diagnosed with the same disorder: assessing psychological disorders.
