Document Summary

Circuit switching: a physical and continuous circuit is established before, and maintained during communication. In modern circuit-switched networks, electronic signals pass through several switches before a connection is established. During a call, no other network traffic can use those switches. When received, packets are reassembled in the proper sequence to make up the message. Packet switching is great for data: cheap and efficient, dropped packets are resent, order of packets unimportant, basically paying for two local calls for two isp"s. Circuit switching: great for voice and video (teleconferencing, minimal dropped packets, no latency. Network topology refers to the physical layout of the network: point to point, bus token ring, hub/switch. Main network layout used today is the hub/switch: makes sense for wireless communications. Used for older telephone systems (telephony: two types. Preeminent: think of a child"s tin can telephone. Switched: a link is established when dialing and then disconnected after use. Each node is connected to a single cable.
