CMN 122 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Impression Management, Social Control, Display Rules
Document Summary
Any given behavior can serve multiple functions. Eye gaze can communicate intimacy, but also dominance or a threat. Intimacy can also be communicated through things like special use, touch, facial expressions, etc. Historically - one of these two things were trying to be communicated in all messages you sent. Myles patterson the father of the functional approach to nonverbal behavior. Encoding functions (patterson, 1982, 1984) - we need to look at the person"s intent for communicating. Convey information through our nonverbals whether they are spontaneous or purposeful. Regulation of conversation - nonverbal traffic signals, very indicative/spontaneous. Intimacy - mutual eye gaze, can also be purposeful or spontaneous. Social control - lying, nonverbals are communicative with the intent to manipulate the other person. Impression management (presentational function) - -use nonverbals to generate a certain impression and potentially control how someone views you, typically communicative, ex. tie signs. Affect management - nonverbal adaptor to manage emotional arousals, usually spontaneous.
