CMN 122 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Cognitive Load, Interrupt
Document Summary
50% of all turns that occur in conversations are smooth. A smooth turn transition occurs when the floor switches from person a to person b without a perceptible pause. These turns transitions occur in less than 250 ms (phonetic pause) People must be anticipating and predicting the end of a speaker"s turn. Listeners plan their utterances while still listening to the speaker"s utterance. Anticipating & predicting the end of speaker"s turn, planning your utterances while listening, & looking for speaker"s yielding cues is called cognitive multitasking. Suggests both people want the floor (to speak) at the same time. When both people are speaking, but only 1 person wants the floor. Ex: say hmmm or wow when other person is telling you something. When you react to what the other person is saying. Speaker behaviors (1) turn yielding cues (2) turn holding cues. Listener behaviors (3) backchannel communication (4) turn requesting cue.
