Made up of arbitrary elements-- no reason why the words we use and the thing it represents are connected, we"ve all agreed on what these words represent. Rules exist for combining these elements-- grammar rules. Potential transformation -- change in the way we say words, etc. The word is thing-like , more real, natural, and tangible. Word you are using is really similar to the thing it stands for, ex. scream, purr, punch, etc. Politeness theory (includes more conceptual concepts in communication: assumptions, all people have face wants (we have a public self-image,or persona that we want people to see and we want people to satisfy your public face) Someone who is close with you (a friend) will not be as threatening as someone who is a stranger: power or status of the listener relative to the speaker. A small request is not really face threatening, a large request is really face threatening. Imposition: how convincing is the request: rank.
