Document Summary

Courtship and early marriage: research findings. Initial attraction is a poor predictor for whether you"re actually going to get marriage or not, for the success of potential marriage. People filter out information on compatibility (filter theory) Filtering out the good and bad through communication, self disclosure, etc. If you find out you have good compatibility, then you should continue on to marriage if you want to. Conflict you have in the beginning might not be that big of an impact. But if you continue having that conflict and still marry, then it would have a big impact later on: theories of marital selection. We have a desire for homogamy of characteristics but only in those initial screenings when thinking about asking someone out. Complementary (want someone who compliments our areas of weaknesses) We"re more likely to be attracted to and marry someone we"re more similar to. In a free choice situation, attraction and interactions will rely on commodities and liabilities.
