CMN 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Public Space, Proxemics
Document Summary
General focus: how people react to violations of their communication expectations. Idealized expectation- what would happen in an ideal situation, idealized standard of conduct, what is appropriate, what is desired, what is preferred. Personal space- the invisible, variable volume of space surrounding an individual that defines that individual"s preferred space from others: the four proxemic zones of americans. Intimate distance (0 to 18 inches: personal distance (18 inches to 4 feet) voice moderate, arms length, only in north. Factors that influence expectancies: context- cultural and societal norms and specific conversational settings formality of the situation, task requirements, communicator characteristics- demographic characteristics and idiosyncratic features age, gender, race, personality, communication style, relationship- closeness, liking, status, etc. Limitations with evt: evt does not address the role of reciprocity in interaction but expectations change, dynamic, evt is silent on whether communicator reward valence supersedes behavior violation valence or vice versa when the two are incongruent.
