BIS 2C Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Nepenthes, Welwitschia, Cactus
Document Summary
*not finished yet, still have to do labs 6, 7 and 8. The definition right after the term is the exact definition from the lab manual: the numbered information is my own addition. Lab 1 - introduction to phylogeny and tree thinking. Taxon - a group of organisms at an unspecified level of a classification scheme can be species, phylum, or any other group of organisms at some level of classification: plural = taxa. Phylogenetic tree/evolutionary tree - a diagram depicting a pattern of lineage splitting. Branching pattern is ancestor-descendent relationships: shows the relationships between organisms and their ancestors and descendents. Characters - features of traits of organisms. can be any trait, examples including morphological, molecular, and behavioral. to be useful, must have some variation of the trait within the species. Distribution of character states - what we use as evidence for the study of taxa in relation to each other.
