Mycoproteins originally discovered in a soil sample in england. Ex: citric acid is a common food additive and comes from fungi. This means they secrete enzymes outside of their bodies that digest food molecules into smaller molecules that can then be absorbed. Clicker question: hyphae = main body structure of fungi. Plantae includes organisms characterized by photosynthesis via primary endosymbiosis with cyanobacteria. Fungi are often recognized by mushrooms, but this is only one stage of their life cycle and most of the organism is microscopic. Fungi are common in our diet, and form essential parts of food such as cheese. Fermented beverages and sauces use specific strains of yeast, a unicellular fungus. Fungi are used as synthetic meat substitutes. Few fungi are toxic to humans and other animals. Many fungi have important medical applications, including antibiotics, states, steroids, and birth control.
