Imprinting sudden, biologically primed form of attachment. Attachment strong emotional bond between children and primary caregivers. First few years is sensitive period for developing secure bond. Strange situation standardized procedure for examining infant attachment: choreographed sequence of separation and reunion with child and caregiver. Secure attachment: explores playroom and reacts positively to stranger, distressed when mother leaves, happy when mother returns. Anxious-resistant attachment: fearful when mother is present, demands mother"s attention, distressed when mother leaves, not soothed when mother returns; may resist attempted contact. Anxious-avoidant attachment: shows few signs of attachment, rarely cries when mother leaves, does not seek contact when mother returns. Secure infants better socially adjusted and have increased capacity for compassion. Attachment deprivation infancy is a sensitive period for attachment. High quality child care does not disrupt children"s attachment to parents ; until age of ~4. 5yrs. Short term anxiety, fear, confusion, depression, behavior problems. Long term greater risk for academic problems, troubled relationships, depression.
