Type 1 (about 10%: autoimmune disease, usually onset at adolescence, hormonal changes, beta cells that produce insulin are all gone because body has attacked it, lack of insulin production, treatment: Too much glucose flowing around in blood stream unable to get into cells. Insulin is the key to open the cell door to allow glucose into the cell: lack of glucose which carries oxygen gets to places like the feet, cells without oxygen die. Blood sugar levels: fasting / morning = 70-90, 80-120. Complications of diabetes: hypoglycemia (low blood sugar, shaking, sweating, anxious, dizziness, hunger, fast heartbeat.
