Document Summary
Government issued photo identification card for residents of nyc: must be at least 14 years old, must apply in person at enrollment center, appointments are currently required. Is a document to prove identity residency in nyc. Connects new yorkers to services, programs, & benefits regardless of immigration status, homeless status, gender identity, former incarceration status. Ex: if your employer unlawfully fires you and you want to testify in court, you cannot have the capacity to use the courts without access to the id. There are limits to benefits though: the card won"t grant city, state, or federal benefits, and won"t be considered a form of authorization for work. States can deprive, can enable, and can design the range of our freedom with regards to movement to acquire resources. Gaining fraudulent documents definitely undermines state"s control due to the fact that people are simply obtaining access despite the fact they aren"t allowed to.
