Grows on a lot of different food sources. Produces exotoxins of the same type as diphtheria toxin. Luckily for us, only an opportunistic pathogen. Readily killed by a healthy immune system. But a common problem in hospitals (1 in 10 nosocomial infections) Leading cause of pneumonia in cf patients. In all cases, bacteria reproduce and invade surrounding tissues. Exotoxins cause local cell damage (less important) Bacteria gain entry to blood, cause sepsis and shock due to endotoxins (more important) Helpful to know that it is pseudomonas.
